Why are computers important to my career?
I plan to be a teacher and football coach, either at the high school or college level.
As a teacher, computers provide an invaluable tool both inside and outside the classrom.
As a teacher, assignments and projects can be posted on web sites giving students 24-hour access
to the information needed for class. This can reduce the time spent copying papers and handing them
out in class. It would also be possible to administer tests online providing immediate results to
both the student and the teacher, thus reducing time spent on grading papers.
Another great benefit of computers would be to use them to provide a better overall teaching experience
for the student. Detailed media presentations are possible and can be made available via the internet
to students 24 hours a day. This would allow students to review material at their leisure and on their
schedule. Difficult subject matter can be enhanced by using graphical and audio presentations in
a variety of formats.
As a student, computers would be an invaluable tool, providing word processing capabilities,
instant access to dictionaries, encyclopdeias, and thesauruses, as well as a wealth of knowledge
and information online.
One new area of teaching that has really grown lately due to the computer area is distance learning. Through internet based
web sites, students who may be too far from campus can take classes over the internet via their home
computer. Teachers can place entire lesson plans online using audio, video, and text to provide the
same effect as if they were sitting in the front row of the class!
As a football coach, computers can be used to quickly design plays and playbooks, making it easier
to distribute and teach to players. A coach can also use software to analyze statistics of opposing teams and
determine the best game plan based on these results. In the NFL, teams use very complex statistical
reports that contain information such as how often a quarterback throws to the left side of the field,
how many times a team runs the ball on 1st down, how accurate a team's place kicker is, and etc... Prior
to computers this was done by hand and subject to miscalculations and mistakes.
These are just a few benefits of computers in my intended career.
